Book of Trees, Both Native and Introduced is a conceptual field guide that addresses the difficulty of integrating oneself within the landscape. This book continues my photographic dialog with field guides and the way that nature is categorized and archived. Photographs of the artist in the landscape explore the parallels in language used to discuss both aspects of trees and human conditions, illustrating ideas such as tree with broken limb, tree with burl and felled tree. Andy Sturdevant’s thoughtful and humorous narrative flows through the book and explores topics that include woodland history, Shakespeare gardens, and current American experiences with wilderness.
